The 'Need for Speed' Relay is a charitable race to support efforts against domestic abuse. Started in 2006 the event is held in southeastern New York State. The course is a 53 mile team relay race starts @ Bear Mountain and ends in downtown New Rochelle.

Our team, made of up of nine runners (and team driver[s]), is named "Shake & Bake" and has participants various areas of the country. Divided into legs of various technical running complexity, distance and other fun features the race course itself is challenging not only because of the length but also because of the logistical intricacies associated with being outside the New York City metro area (TRAFFIC insanity). Each year, our dedicated and motivated team captain, my good friend Neil McClure, computes all of these details using secrets known only to him to select specific legs for each of our team runners to ensure we perform at our best. I'm proud to be a member of team "Shake & Bake" since its early beginnings way back in 2007.

To chronicle our team experiences I've created this page. Unfortunately, we have limited photos from the 2007 event; however, we have more from 2008. If you're a fellow team member and have some additional photos please send me an e-mail and I'll ll post the photos here.

2008 - June 8th

Team Members:
  • Runners: Lindsay, Chris, Adam, Paul, Neil, Brian, Danny, Dan, Chad
  • Driver: Greg

Overview:
The 2008 event turned out to be a very exciting one! Back for our 2nd year, team "Shake & Bake" stepped it up with some new features. First and foremost, we had not only casual cotton t-shirts to show off to our friends but also synthetic wicking shirts for our athletic activities during the day. Many thanks to Neil, Dan & Paul for taking care of this critical running apparel requirement. Of course, what good is fancy clothing if you can't transport the team? Well, we stepped that up as well and thanks to donations from all our team members and Neil's Dad, Mike McClure, the official team "Shake & Bake" van was born. It served us well.

Unfortunately, the weather was less than cooperative. 100 seemed to be the number of choice and although that's a good number to see when on your test during grade school years it totally sucks when it refers to the temperature in Fahrenheit and level of humidity (man the northeast weather really sucks eh?) ... ESPECIALLY to run in! Yeap, and that is just about what we had. However, is that a cause for team "Shake & Bake" to quit? Of course not! Despite the debilitating warm temperatures we stayed in it until the end! Not even an official race closure, various fellow fallen event participants as ambulance passengers and race official yelling at us caused us to stop. Stupid? Perhaps. But we're team "Shake & Bake": dedicated, motivated to finished the race and we "wanna go fast."

GO team "Shake & Bake!" And thanks to all the donors of money, friends, family, relatives, dogs, cats, sons, daughters, car rental agents, public service officials and the creator of air conditioning for making our 2008 efforts a success. See you next year!

2007 - June 10th

Team Members:
  • Runners: Lindsay, Chris, Adam, Paul, Neil, Brian, Danny, Dan, Chad
  • Drivers: Mike, Brian

Overview:
Our first year of running the 'Need for Speed' Relay was a lot of fun! Our team, "Shake and Bake," performed very well together and we raised nearly $2,000 for the cause. Unfortunately, we have limited photos (c'mon fellow team members, send them my way) but we all remember it in our own way.

Thanks to everyone on our team for doing such a great job and to our fearless team leader Neil for pulling us all together.
