Monday started off somewhat normal.
An office full of fairly noisy discussions of recent weekend events carried on. Suddenly--as if a light bulb was turned on inside his head--Sholom popped his head up and asked "Adam, we need you to go to Reno for an upcoming presentation. Sound okay? You don't have to go but I thought you'd want to so I'm giving you first crack at it." My response: "Sounds good to me. When do I leave?"
First and foremost this trip to Reno was a full-fledged working business trip. Our company had a major presentation with a big-time player. I was responsible for dealing with all the technical logistics surrounding the presentation This would normally be a moderate responsibility; however, when you add
Jay Walker--a full-fledged detail-oriented egotist--as the man for the trip the entire dynamic changed to be something more of a large-scale feat. There were a lot of business plans, a lot of preparation work, and a lot of technical issues to deal with. In ten business days I not only had to prepare for the trip but I also had to test out new equipment, assist in the software testing, and work with the research and design folks to ensure the presentation went as planned.
I flew out to Reno late Sunday night and stayed at the Reno Hilton. Early Monday I picked up a rental van, headed over to the house we were staying at in Squaw Valley, and prepared for the presentation. Tuesday morning was spent driving to Reno, tending to logistical details, and enduring the five hour presentation. Wednesday was a break down day and entailed my working with FedEx to ship the equipment back to our office, returning the van, and of course . . . starting the drive to the airport. Of course, it wouldn't make much sense to fly out of Reno, requiring a 2 hour layover and a more expensive flight, when a flight out of Oakland, Cali is direct and much less expensive. What's a 200 mile drive across the great state of California from Reno to San Francisco to Oakland? Easy answer: the beauty of Lake Tahoe.
What’s the point of being on a business trip if you aren’t able to have a little fun? My motto is that life is all about having fun . . and so was the drive west. If you’ve ever done it you undoubtedly know the magic along the route; if you haven’t and you ever have the opportunity to do so I highly recommend making it happen; I’m damn glad I did.
